Ways to win slots

Online slots that use the ways to win reel mechanics have become a popular and modern alternative to games that use traditional paylines. Typically, ways to win games pay for symbol combinations that line up from left to right.

There are also variants of ways to win slots, known as All Ways, that pay out for symbol combinations from left to right and right to left. We’re going to look at both variants and explain how they work, plus introduce you to games you can play using All Ways and Ways to Win reel mechanics with a varying number of Pay Ways.

Popular Ways to Win Slots

Right off the bat, we’ve picked out some of the most popular ways to win slot games that pay out using what is called the ‘Adjacent Reels’ system, which we explain in more detail below.

List of All Ways Slots

In the introduction, we mentioned that All Ways slots form symbol combinations that pay from left to right and right to left. Most seasoned casino players refer to this same system as ‘Pay Both Ways’. As you can imagine, this type of reel mechanic has become incredibly popular because you can line up symbols from both sides of the reels.

How Payways Slots Work

The first point to make is that ways to win games do not use paylines, hence software providers often refer to the number of ways to win as Payways. Moreover, you will also see this style of casino game referred to as no-payline slots.

Now, to explain how online crypto slots with no paylines work, we need to explain a system slot developers and casino players refer to as ‘adjacent reels’ symbol combinations.

Adjacent Reels Symbol Combination Wins Explained

Rule number one is that to form a symbol combination win, the adjacent reel system allows a symbol to land in any position on a reel, and as long as matching symbols land on the reels next to it, it can become a part of the combination win.

Rule number two is that the first symbol in the combination must start on reel one, and rule number three is that the symbols must run from left to right.

As a result of the adjacent reel rules, here are three examples of what a symbol combination will look like.

  • 3-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 1-2-3
  • 4-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 1-2-3-4
  • 5-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 1-2-3-4-5

You can see that with each combination, there are no reels without a symbol. For example, if you landed 3 Ace symbols, and they are on reels 1-3-4, because there is no Ace on reel 2, the way the symbols landed does not follow the adjacent symbols rules, and therefore, there is no winning payout.

How Allways Slots Work

All Ways slots, also known as Pay Both Ways, use the above left-to-right symbol, but also allow you to line up symbols from right to left. Effectively, the reverse of the above.

  • 3-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 5-4-3
  • 4-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 5-4-3-2
  • 5-Symbol Combination Win: The same symbol anywhere on reels 5-4-3-2-1

Common Types of Payways Slots

Ways to win slots feature varying reel sizes depending on the number of payways the software provider developing the game wants to include. The higher the number of reels and rows, the more payways the game can offer.

Here are a few examples of all ways slots that use a different number of ways to win:

  • 243 Ways to Win: 5x3 reels (3 symbols per reel, all combinations active)
  • 1024 Ways to Win: 5x4 reels (4 symbols per reel)
  • 4096 Ways to Win: 6x4 reels (4 symbols on 6 reels)
  • 15,625 Ways to Win: 6x5 reels (5 symbols on 6 reels)

FAQ

Are all ways slot machines better or worse than payline slots?

Not necessarily. All online slots come with an RTP (Return to Play), which determines your ROI. An always slot can have a lower or higher RTP than a payline slot, and vice versa. Therefore, it is down to personal choice whether you prefer All Ways or Payline slot games.

Why are ways to win slots popular?

As there are no paylines, playing a ways to win slot feels like you have more freedom when it comes to creating symbol combinations, as the symbols in a combination can land in any position on their respective reels.

Can I play All Ways and Ways to Win slots for free?

Yes. Here on mBitcasino, you can choose any of the All Ways slots in our gaming lobbies by selecting demo mode.

Are Megaways slots the same as ways to win casino games?

In many ways, yes. Megaways slots use exactly the same ‘Adjacent Reels’ mechanic to create symbol combination wins. The key difference is that Megaways uses shape-shifting reels that produce a random number of symbols between 2 and 7 on each reel, while ways to win slots use a fixed number of symbols per reel.

Which alternatives are there to ways to win slots?

If you are looking for no-payline slots as an alternative, there are several options. Megaways and Trueways slots give you a random number of symbols per reel. Alternatively, you can play Cluster Pays or Pay Anywhere (scatter pays) online slot games, which also do not use paylines.
